Jill Scott's mom Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on the 4th of April, 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. As an only girl, she was raised also with her grandmother, who was also maternal. Scott studied at The Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduating in the year 2000, she enrolled at Temple University. Scott completed her secondary school education as well as working two different jobs. The hope was to become an English high school teacher. She had a dream of becoming an English teacher in high school was shattered when she dropped out of high school. She began her career by doing live performances of poems as well as the work of her own. She eventually joined forces along with Amir Quest Thompson, a part of The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by the two. Then, during Roots' performance she came out as an artist. After that, she got collaborations which included Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. Additionally, she was able to learn about the arts of performing during the tour that Broadway's musical Rent. Also, she was the first signed by Hidden Beach Recordings.
